Back and Lay Betting Explained, With Liability Examples

Exchanges let you do something a traditional bookmaker does not: bet that something will not happen. That is called laying. Understanding it, and especially lay liability, is the single most useful thing a new exchange player can learn.

Backing: betting that something will happen

When you back India at decimal odds of 1.80 with a stake of ₹1,000, you win ₹800 profit if India wins (your stake back plus ₹800) and lose ₹1,000 if they do not. Profit on a back bet is stake × (odds − 1).

Laying: betting that something will not happen

When you lay India at 1.80, you take the other side of someone’s back bet. If India loses, you win the backer’s stake. If India wins, you pay the backer’s profit. The amount you could lose is called your liability.

Liability = backer’s stake × (odds − 1)

Worked examples

Bet Odds Stake If it happens If it does not
Back India 1.80 ₹1,000 +₹800 −₹1,000
Lay India 1.80 ₹1,000 −₹800 +₹1,000
Lay the underdog 4.00 ₹1,000 −₹3,000 +₹1,000
Lay a long shot 10.00 ₹500 −₹4,500 +₹500

The last two rows are the lesson. Laying at high odds risks far more than you can win. Always read the liability figure on the bet slip before you confirm.

Trading: backing and laying the same selection

Suppose you back a team at 2.50 with ₹1,000 before the match. They start well and their odds drop to 1.80. If you now lay them at 1.80, you can lock in a result whichever team wins. The exact amounts depend on the stakes you choose; many exchanges show a “cash out” or a calculator that does the arithmetic for you. Trading reduces risk only if you understand it; it is not a guaranteed profit.

Commission

Many exchanges charge a commission on net winnings in a market. Rates vary, so check the exchange’s rules before you start.

Common mistakes

  • Confusing the back and lay columns. Most exchanges colour them differently; check before you tap.
  • Laying at high odds without noticing the liability.
  • Chasing a price during fast in-play moves. Set your stake before the over begins.

Frequently asked questions

What is lay liability?

The amount you could lose on a lay bet: the backer’s stake multiplied by the odds minus one.

Is laying riskier than backing?

At high odds, yes. Laying at 10.00 risks nine times the amount you can win.

Can I lock in a result on an exchange?

Yes, by backing and later laying the same selection (trading), though the result depends on price movement.

Do exchanges charge commission?

Many charge commission on net winnings. Check the rate on your exchange.
